Blood transfusions can be a life-saving treatment for our feline patients presenting with severe anaemia and coagulopathies and is a treatment that veterinary nurses can be actively involved in. These transfusions however do not come without risks to both the donor and the recipient, and many aspects need to be considered.

Lindsey is an Emergency and Critical Care Nurse at the Edinburgh University Hospital for Small Animals. She graduated in 2012 from the College of Animal Welfare and started her career in mixed practice. She soon discovered her passion for ECC nursing and achieved the Vets Now certificate in emergency and critical care. In 2015 she started her current job with the Edinburgh University as a dedicated ECC nurse in a busy ICU department. In 2017 Lindsey was awarded a scholarship from Edinburgh University which enabled her to complete the Vet Tech Specialist (ECC) qualification in 2019 and she has a particular interest in trauma, blood transfusions and acid-base and electrolyte disturbances.
This online course is worth 2 hours of CPD.
A certificate will be available from the ‘My Courses’ section, for you to download and print, once you have completed the course. A permanent record of your total CPD hours will also be recorded in your account section.
The Australian Veterinary Nurse and Technician (AVNAT) Regulatory Council has allocated 2 AVNAT CPD points to this continuing education activity.

A flexi course is designed to be completely flexible, where all the learning resources are provided immediately. There are usually four modules, and most delegates complete one module per week, but it is completely up to you, how and when you decide to complete the course. You have unlimited lifetime access to all the supportive learning materials, and once you have completed the whole course, a certificate will be automatically generated.
Upon purchase you will be immediately registered to attend this module, with unlimited lifetime access. The module will consist of two hours of CPD, in the form of a tutorial, a quiz and also a selection of further reading journals, articles or book chapters.
This module can be studied as a stand alone course, and a certificate of attendance for two hours of CPD will be provided once the module has been completed. Alternatively, this module can be combined with any other three modules to provide a bespoke Flexi course providing eight hours of CPD

All of our courses are aimed at veterinary nurses in general practice, but everyone who works in the veterinary profession is very welcome to attend, whether you are a clinical receptionist, veterinary surgeon, student nurse or have been a qualified nurse for over 20 years!

– maybe most suitable for qualified nurses in general practice along with referral / specialist nurses looking for a refresher course

– maybe most suitable for referral / specialist nurses and highly experienced qualified nurses in general practice
