Module 1

The Immune System

Learning objectives
After completion of this module, participants should be able to:

 

  • Understand the specialised cells and molecules of the immune system
  • Recognise which organs are involved in the immune system and their function
  • Identify physical barriers that play a role in a patient’s immune system
  • Explain the difference between innate and adaptive immune responses
  • Explain the difference between humoral and cell mediated immunity
  • Understand the laboratory diagnostics in immunology
  • Understand thermoregulation in veterinary patients and differentiate hyperthermia vs pyrexia
  • Differentiate different types of immune system disorders

Module 2

Immune-Mediated Haemolytic Anaemia (IMHA)

Learning objectives
After completion of this module, participants should be able to:

 

  • Understand the pathophysiology of immune mediated haemolytic anaemia (IMHA)
  • Recognise the common clinical signs associated with IMHA
  • Understand the diagnostic tests performed during the diagnosis of IMHA
  • Perform in-house cytology as part of the diagnosis of IMHA
  • Understand the treatment options available for veterinary patients including long-term monitoring
  • Recognise the prognosis of the disease and negative prognostic factors
  • Consider the nursing considerations for these patients and the role of the RVN

Module 3

Immune-Mediated Thrombocytopenia (IMTP)

Learning objectives
After completion of this module, participants should be able to:

 

  • Understand the pathophysiology of immune mediated thrombocytopaenia (IMTP)
  • Define thrombocytopaenia and recognise what our platelets are
  • Recognise the common clinical signs associated with this condition
  • Understand the laboratory tests performed during the diagnosis of ITP
  • Review the manual platelet count
  • Understand the diagnostic tests performed during the diagnosis of ITP
  • Understand the treatment options available for veterinary patients including long term monitoring
  • Recognise the prognosis of this disease and negative prognostic factors
  • Consider the nursing considerations for these patients

Module 4

Immune-Mediated Polyarthritis (IMPA)

Learning objectives
After completion of this module, participants should be able to:

 

  • Understand the pathophysiology of IMPA
  • Differential erosive vs non-erosive forms of IMPA
  • Recognise the classification system of IMPA
  • Recognise the most common clinical signs associated with this disease
  • Understand the diagnostic tests performed in these patients (including infectious disease screening)
  • Understand the method of arthrocentesis and how to assist the veterinary surgeon
  • Understand the treatment options available to these patients
  • Recognise the differences in polyarthritis in feline patients
  • Understand the role of the RVN when caring for these patients

Charlotte studied for three years at The Royal Veterinary College, where she graduated with FdSc in Veterinary Nursing, qualifying as a registered veterinary nurse (RVN) in 2014. She continued her studies there for a further year, whilst working as an RVN part-time for her BSc Honours in Veterinary Nursing and graduating in 2015.  Charlotte joined Southfields Veterinary Specialists in 2016 as a multi-disciplinary nurse and later moved to the internal medicine department in December 2017. Charlotte was appointed Senior Internal Medicine Nurse in November 2019 and in this role, she managed the internal medicine nursing team, working closely with the internal medicine specialists and wider nursing team. She recently progressed to the Clinical Services Team Lead where she oversees Internal Medicine, Neurology and the Surgery departments. Charlotte obtained the Vets Now Emergency and Critical Care certificate in 2019 and Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) status in small animal internal medicine (SAIM) 2022. Charlotte’s area of interests within medicine include: transfusion medicine, endocrine diseases and emergency medicine.

All of our courses are aimed at veterinary nurses in general practice, but everyone who works in the veterinary profession is very welcome to attend, whether you are a clinical receptionist, veterinary surgeon, student nurse or have been a qualified nurse for over 20 years!

 

The courses are not formally assessed for skill level, so the following CPD levels are just a rough guide to help you decide if a course may be more or less suitable:

 

Introduction
– maybe most suitable for qualified nurses in general practice approaching a new topic or looking for a refresher course

Intermediate
– maybe most suitable for qualified nurses in general practice along with referral / specialist nurses looking for a refresher course

Advanced
– maybe most suitable for referral / specialist nurses and highly experienced qualified nurses in general practice
