Course Summary

There are many conditions where a patient may require supplemented oxygen, for example, dyspnoea, shock, sepsis, SIRs and head trauma.  This 45 minute eCPD tutorial will cover:

 

  • Definitions and causes for hypoxaemia and hypoxia.
  • Methods of oxygen delivery both non-invasive and invasive
  • Comparison of techniques with reference to the fractional inspired oxygen concentration (FiO2) that they provide to the patient, the needs of the patient, patient compliance, patient size, degree of hypoxaemia, anticipated duration of delivery, skill and equipment available.
  • Humidification of oxygen
  • Oxygen toxicity
  • Other complications of oxygen therapy
  • Assessment of oxygenation and ventilation

Sam spent 12 years working in several university and referral hospitals, where she gained the DipAVN in 2006 and VTS (Anesthesia) in 2007.  In 2014 Sam joined Anglia Ruskin University as lecturer in Advanced Veterinary Nursing and Course Leader for the BSc(Hons) in Veterinary Nursing before moving to VetSkill in 2018, where she is currently the Operations Director.  Sam’s main interests include anaesthesia and surgical nursing with particular interests in patient safety in anaesthesia, surgery and recovery, infection control and acute and chronic pain.

The Australian Veterinary Nurse and Technician (AVNAT) Regulatory Council has allocated 0.75 AVNAT CPD points to this continuing education activity.

 

This course is also recognised by the New Zealand Veterinary Nursing Association (NZVNA) as providing 0.75 CPD points.

– maybe most suitable for referral / specialist nurses and highly experienced qualified nurses in general practice
