Week 1

From Conception to Weaning
  • Parent health prior to conception and how this may affect pregnancy, parturition, and offspring
  • Nutritional requirements during pregnancy
  • Nutritional adaptations required during lactation
  • Neonate nutritional requirements, including how to hand feed effectively
  • Weaning

Learning objectives
After completion of this week, participants should be able to:

 

  • Discuss how nutrition affects reproduction and key adaptations that are required
  • Have a clear understanding of how to promote health through nutrition during lactation
  • Identify the essential nutritional requirements for neonates
  • Understand how to hand feed neonates correctly

Week 2

Growth
  • Optimal growth
  • Effects of neutering

Learning objectives

  • Correctly use growth charts to map growth
  • Identify when growth is not ideal and the necessary changes that are required to maintain a healthy weight to adulthood
  • Have a good understanding of the nutritional adaptations that will be required at the point of neutering

Adult Maintenance

  • Understand nutritional requirements for adults and how these must be adapted for each pet’s circumstance
  • Identify points of concern and to make appropriate recommendations
  • Reflect on how nutritional requirement for working dog may differ from pet dogs

Week 4

Golden Oldies – Senior Pets
  • Defining ‘senior’ age as an individual process
  • Understanding age related changes and how these require nutritional adaptation
  • Environmental considerations for pets in their senior years

  • Confidently assess the needs of a senior pet
  • Identify environmental changes that may be required
  • Understanding of the dynamic changes to nutrition that are required for seniors to better support the pet and pet owner

Week 5

Diet Choices
  • Examination of the pet food label
  • Introduction to alternative diet types and how to have conversations with pet owners
  • How to manage pets fed an alternative diet within a hospital environment

After completion of this week, participants should be able to:

 

  • Identify all key information on a pet food label and how this is used to determine a feeding amount
  • Have a broad understanding of the pros and cons associated with alternative diets that are now commonly fed
  • Appreciate methods for assessing the suitability of alternative diets and how to improve safety
  • Confidently talk to the pet owner who wish to feed an alternative diet type

Week 6

Maintaining an Ideal Weight
  • Assess ideal weight through body condition scoring and muscle condition scoring
  • Simple steps to ensure obesity does not occur, and what can help if it does
  • How to calculate a feeding quantity of dry, wet or mixed diet types

Learning objectives
After completion of this week, participants should be able to:

 

  • Confidently be able to body condition score and muscle condition score to identify an ideal weight and good health
  • Understand how simple food management in the home can prevent obesity occurring
  • Thoroughly understand calculations for determining a feeding amount to prevent over, or under feeding

This course will be fully tutored by Georgia Woods-Lee and will consist of 15 hours of CPD given in various formats, including tutorials, tasks, case studies, forum discussions and quizzes.  This course is tutored for 6 weeks, followed by a two week extension of untutored ‘catch up’ time, before the course officially ends.

 

All delegates will then have unlimited lifetime access to the learning material for future reference

Georgia qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2004 from Myerscough College, Preston. In 2010 Georgia was appointed as Head Nurse and clinical coach of a small animal practice in Cheshire, developing successful obesity care and other nursing clinics.  In June 2015, Georgia took the position of ROYAL CANIN® Weight Management Clinic Nurse at the University of Liverpool, Small Animal Teaching Hospital, where she is now dealing exclusively with pet obesity and nutrition. In addition to the day to day running of the clinic, Georgia also assists with the research the clinic undertakes and has provided education to vets and nurses throughout many countries around the world.  Georgia gained her Certificate in Canine and Feline Veterinary Health Nutrition in 2017, the American Veterinary Technician Specialist (VTS) in Nutrition certificate in 2019 – being 1 of only 25 people to hold this accreditation, and her BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing (Top up) degree in 2022.

CPD Hours

This online course is worth 15 hours of CPD.

 

A certificate will be available from the ‘My Courses’ section, for you to download and print, once you have completed the course.  A permanent record of your total CPD hours will also be recorded in your account section.

AVNAT

Australia and New Zealand 

The Australian Veterinary Nurse and Technician (AVNAT) Regulatory Council has allocated 15 AVNAT CPD points to this continuing education activity.

 

This course is also recognised by the New Zealand Veterinary Nursing Association (NZVNA) as providing 15 CPD points.

 

Information

Upon purchase you will be registered to attend the course, for 6 weeks from the start date.  The course will consist of various interactive tasks and lessons, including quizzes, case studies, forum discussions and further reading material.

 

The course is fully tutored, with new material will be provided each Monday morning, but the onus will be on the individual delegate to ensure that all tasks are fully complete.  The certificate will only be issued at the end of the course when all tasks have been accomplished.  Fewer CPD hours will be awarded at the the end of the course if there are unfinished tasks or there has been no contribution to the discussion forum, for example

 

The course is fully flexible, and there are no weekly ‘deadlines’ – the lessons and tasks may be completed whenever is convenient for each delegate, and any live lessons with be recorded and made available later that same day.   Furthermore, all the course material will be available for a further 2 weeks, to allow delegates the opportunity to catch up on missed lessons and tasks, or to take the opportunity to delve further into the suggested reading texts.  Please note however, that the course will not be tutored by the speaker during these final two weeks, but the time spent will count towards your CPD hours

 

After 8 weeks, the course will be complete and there will be no further opportunity to gain the certificate or CPD hours, however, you will have unlimited lifetime access to the tutorials, further reading and quizzes for future reference.  If you make any personal notes during the course using the ‘take notes’ app, these will be saved, along with your certificate and CPD record for permanent access in ‘My CPD’

– maybe most suitable for qualified nurses in general practice approaching a new topic or looking for a refresher course

Intermediate
– maybe most suitable for qualified nurses in general practice along with referral / specialist nurses looking for a refresher course

Advanced
– maybe most suitable for referral / specialist nurses and highly experienced qualified nurses in general practice
