Summary

Nursing respiratory patients can often be very difficult, with the animals requiring careful nursing to avoid their deterioration. This 1 hour 45 minute online eCPD tutorial looks at dealing with these patients effectively in order to achieve a positive outcome. We will look at preparing for and dealing with the emergency respiratory patient. It will also look at when and how to intervene, and the equipment we are likely to require. The tutorial will cover oxygen supplementation methods, intubation, tracheostomy and chest drain placement and nursing care.

Louise qualified as a Veterinary Nurse in 1999, having previously completed a BSc in Environmental Science. She gained her Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Surgical) in 2004, followed by her Diploma in Advanced Veterinary Nursing (Medical) in 2007. She has contributed to numerous journals and has co-authored a book on wound management. She worked as head nurse at Petmedics in Manchester, the largest UK emergency clinic, for nine years, before becoming Clinical Support Manager for Vets Now in 2016. Louise is a double certified Veterinary Technician Specialist in Emergency and Critical Care and Anaesthesia, and is a member of the Academy of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Technicians.
