Description

 

This short course is an introduction to project design for veterinary nurses who would like to conduct some research but are not sure where to start. It will be useful for all RVNs who wish to initiate or partake in clinically based small scale research projects within their own veterinary practice or within their area of clinical expertise.  The course will cover key aspects of small-scale project design and appraisal.

 

There are four learning outcomes, and by the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  1. Critically apply knowledge, skills and understanding to all aspects of research project design.
  2. Apply understanding to legal obligations of research project design.
  3. Effectively search for and critically appraise literature to provide context and rationale for the project design
  4. Create, develop and refine a project design proposal.

Week 1
Introduction to Project Design

 

Learning objectives
After completion of this week, participants should be able to:

  • Understand how to refine a research question or idea
  • Develop study aims
  • Know how to develop a strong methodology
  • Critically apply knowledge, skills and understanding to all aspects of small-scale research project design
  • Effectively search for and critically appraise literature to provide context and rationale for their project design

Week 2
Consent and Data Handling

 

Learning objectives
After completion of this week, participants should be able to:

  • Understand all aspects of participant selection
  • Realise the importance of obtaining informed consent
  • Handle and store personal and scientific data
  • Apply their understanding to legal obligations of research project design

Week 3
Data Collection – how to obtain meaningful results

 

Learning objectives
After completion of this week, participants should be able to:

  • Describe types design strategies and common data collection tools
  • Critique a survey – and design a good one
  • Create, develop and refine a project design proposal

Week 4
The Ethical Review Process

 

Learning objectives
After completion of this week, participants should be able to:

  • Understand ethical approval and why it is necessary
  • Know how to obtain ethical approval, and what to submit to gain approval

Week 5
Data Analysis

 

Learning objectives
After completion of this week, participants should be able to:

  • Realise that it is poor practice to obtain data and then start planning how to analyse it
  • Appreciate a brief introduction to statistical analysis

Week 6
Writing up your Study Report or Design Proposal

 

Learning objectives
After completion of this week, participants should be able to:

  • Structure your own study report
  • Appreciate an introduction to skilful academic writing

This course will be fully tutored by Alison Langridge and will consist of 15 hours of CPD given in various formats, including tutorials, tasks, case studies, forum discussions and quizzes.

This course is tutored for 6 weeks, followed by a two week extension of untutored ‘catch up’ time, before the course officially ends.

All delegates will then have unlimited lifetime access to the learning material for future reference.

Alison qualified as an RVN in 2003 and currently works as an online lecturer for the College of Animal Welfare, teaching and supporting all years of BScVN and Top-Up undergraduates.  She has an MSc, Post Graduate Diploma and Post Graduate Certificate in Veterinary Education.

 

Prior to joining CAW, she worked for many years at the Royal Veterinary College where she was a final year project supervisor for veterinary medicine, veterinary nursing and veterinary biosciences undergraduates. One of the modules she leads at CAW is the Work-Based project, which supports Top-Up degree undergraduates through a research project from conception to submission.

 

She is also one of four RVN panel members on the RCVS Ethics Review Panel and is passionate about
RVN-led research in practice.

This online course is worth 15 hours of CPD.

 

A certificate will be available from the ‘My Courses’ section, for you to download and print, once you have completed the course.  A permanent record of your total CPD hours will also be recorded in your account section.

 

The Australian Veterinary Nurse and Technician (AVNAT) Regulatory Council has allocated 15 AVNAT CPD points to this continuing education activity.

 

This course is also recognised by the New Zealand Veterinary Nursing Association (NZVNA) as providing 15 CPD points.

 

Upon purchase you will be registered to attend the course, for 6 weeks from the start date.  The course will consist of various interactive tasks and lessons, including quizzes, case studies, forum discussions and further reading material.

 

The course is fully tutored, with new material will be provided each Monday morning, but the onus will be on the individual delegate to ensure that all tasks are fully complete.  The certificate will only be issued at the end of the course when all tasks have been accomplished.  Fewer CPD hours will be awarded at the the end of the course if there are unfinished tasks or there has been no contribution to the discussion forum, for example.

 

The course is fully flexible, and there are no weekly ‘deadlines’ – the lessons and tasks may be completed whenever is convenient for each delegate, and any live lessons with be recorded and made available later that same day.   Furthermore, all the course material will be available for a further 2 weeks, to allow delegates the opportunity to catch up on missed lessons and tasks, or to take the opportunity to delve further into the suggested reading texts.  Please note however, that the course will not be tutored by the speaker during these final two weeks, but the time spent will count towards your CPD hours.

 

After 8 weeks, the course will be complete and there will be no further opportunity to gain the certificate or CPD hours, however, you will have unlimited lifetime access to the tutorials, further reading and quizzes for future reference.  If you make any personal notes during the course using the ‘take notes’ app, these will be saved, along with your certificate and CPD record for permanent access in ‘My CPD’.

  • Intermediate – maybe most suitable for qualified nurses in general practice along with referral / specialist nurses looking for a refresher course
  • Advanced – maybe most suitable for referral / specialist nurses and highly experienced qualified nurses in general practice.
